What a customer looks for before they ring a decorator

Typical searches are painter and decorator plus a town, interior painting, exterior house painting, wallpaper hanging, hallway stairs and landing, and kitchen cabinet spraying. The customer is usually comparing two or three decorators side by side, so the page has to show quality quickly.

🖌️

The finish, up close

Wide shots of nice rooms could be anyone's. Close ups of cutting in along a ceiling line, glossed woodwork, and a wallpaper seam you cannot find are what show a decorator's hand.

🧰

What your prep includes

Filling, sanding, caulking, stain block, number of coats, and which paint brands you use. Customers comparing quotes rarely know why one is dearer. Your page can explain it before they ask.

🏠

Working in a lived in home

Say how you protect floors and furniture, whether you move things, what hours you work, and that you leave each room usable overnight where you can. That is the reassurance people want and rarely get.

What goes on a good one page site for painters and decorators

Exterior work and interior work are searched for separately, and so are specialist jobs like wallpapering and spraying. If you do them, each needs its own short entry on the page with a photo, not a single line that says "all aspects of decorating".

  • Interior painting, exterior painting, wallpapering and spraying as separate services
  • Photos of your own work: rooms, woodwork close ups, exteriors
  • What your preparation includes, in plain words
  • The paint brands you use, and whether paint is in the price
  • How you protect furniture and floors
  • Landlord, commercial or new build work, if you take it
  • The towns you cover
  • Tap to call, WhatsApp and email buttons

Accreditations and trust marks worth showing

Decorating is unlicensed, so membership and training do the talking. The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) is the main UK trade body. Dulux Select Decorators is an assessed scheme, and if you are on it, say so. TrustMark is government endorsed and worth showing. A City and Guilds or NVQ qualification, public liability insurance with the amount, and a CSCS card for site work round it off.

Only show logos you currently hold. A lapsed membership badge is easy for a customer to check and hard to explain.

Mistakes painters and decorators make online

  • Only wide photos, where the quality of the cutting in and the woodwork cannot be seen.
  • Saying "no job too small" when you would not come out for one ceiling. State your real minimum.
  • Nothing about exterior work being weather dependent, so customers ring in November expecting a start date.
  • Photos with dust sheets, ladders and tins in shot. Photograph the room when it is finished and clear.
  • Relying on a Facebook album as a portfolio, which a customer without an account may not be able to see.

More on this in my guides: using photos to win trade work, getting more reviews, how to price a job. For the money side, see how much a trade website costs.

How it works, and what it costs

I am one person, not an agency. I made the builder so you can see your own site before you spend anything.

1. Build it yourself, free

Open the builder, type in your business name, area and phone number, and it puts your page together in about 2 minutes. No card up front.

2. Free for 14 days

Change the wording, look at it on your phone, show it to someone whose opinion you trust. It costs nothing for the 14 days.

3. Keep it for £299 once

If you keep it, it is £299 once and it goes live on its own address within 24 hours of payment. No monthly fee, hosting included. If you do not pay, it is switched off and nothing is charged.

The domain name itself is not included (about £8 to £15 a year, and it stays in your name). Connecting it is free.

Painter and Decorator website FAQs

Questions painters and decorators ask me. Anything else? Send me a message.

Should I list the paint brands I use?

Yes. Customers recognise names like Dulux Trade, Crown Trade, Johnstone's, Little Greene and Farrow and Ball, and naming what you use (and whether you will use paint the customer supplies) answers a question they were going to ask anyway. It also helps explain your price against a cheaper quote.

Can I show that I hang wallpaper as well as paint?

Yes. Give wallpapering its own entry in your services with a photo, and say whether you hang murals, wide width or paste the wall papers. People search for a wallpaper hanger separately from a painter, so it should not be hidden in a list.

Is it really free to build?

Yes. You build the site yourself in the builder in about 2 minutes, and it is free for 14 days. There is no card up front. If you keep it, it is £299 once, with no monthly fee and hosting included. If you do not pay, the site is switched off and nothing is charged.

What happens after 14 days?

If you want to keep the site, you pay £299 once and it goes live on its own address within 24 hours of payment. There is no monthly fee and hosting is included. The domain name itself is not included (about £8 to £15 a year), but connecting it is free. If you do not pay, the site is switched off and nothing is charged.

Should a decorator put prices on a website?

A guide helps. A from price for an average room, or a day rate, sets expectations and saves you quoting for people with a very different budget. Say clearly that the final figure depends on the condition of the surfaces, the height of the ceilings and how much preparation is needed.

Can I use the site to fill my diary with exterior work?

Exterior painting is seasonal, so say on the page when you book exteriors and how far ahead customers should enquire. You can change that wording yourself whenever your diary changes.
