What a customer checks before they ring a locksmith

Typical searches are locksmith near me, emergency locksmith plus a town, locked out, lock change, uPVC door lock repair, broken key in lock, burglary repairs and anti snap locks. Locksmith search results are crowded with national call centres posing as local firms, and customers have learned to be suspicious. Your page has to prove you are a real person in a real area.

📍

Response area and real hours

Name the towns and postcodes you cover and the hours you answer the phone. If you are 24 hour, say so. If you stop at 10pm, say that instead. A false 24 hour claim costs you reviews.

💷

A price before you arrive

Give from prices for a lockout and a standard lock change, and say whether there is a call out fee. Only write "no call out fee" if that is true on every job, at every hour.

🪪

Proof you are a real local locksmith

Your name, a photo of you or your van, and your MLA approval or DBS check if you have them. This is what separates you from the call centre adverts.

What goes on a good one page site for locksmiths

Planned work matters as much as emergencies. New homeowners changing the locks, landlords between tenancies, and people whose insurer has asked for a particular lock standard all search in daylight and compare. Give lock upgrades and uPVC mechanism repairs their own lines, and mention that you try non destructive entry first.

  • A tap to call button at the top, with the hours you really answer
  • The towns and postcodes you cover
  • From prices for lockouts and lock changes, and your call out fee policy
  • Non destructive entry first, stated plainly
  • uPVC and composite door mechanisms, if you repair them
  • Lock upgrades to insurance standards
  • MLA approval, DBS check and insurance, where you hold them
  • Your name and a photo of you or the van

Accreditations and trust marks worth showing

Locksmiths are not licensed by the government in the UK, which is exactly why customers are nervous. The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) is the recognised trade body. Its approved companies are vetted and inspected, so if you are one, put it at the top. If you are not, a DBS check, public liability insurance and your real name and area are the honest alternatives.

Know the standards customers' insurers ask about and name them: BS 3621 for mortice locks and nightlatches, and TS 007 three star or Sold Secure Diamond (SS312) for anti snap euro cylinders. A sentence on each shows competence.

Mistakes locksmiths make online

  • Claiming a response time you cannot always meet. Say "usually within the hour locally" only if it is true, otherwise give none.
  • "No call out fee" on the site and then a surcharge at night. Customers remember and review it.
  • Listing fake addresses in towns you do not operate from. Google suspends profiles for it and customers feel misled.
  • No prices at all, which reads as "it will be expensive" to someone comparing on their phone.
  • Stock photos and no name, which makes a genuine sole trader look like one more call centre.

More on this in my guides: getting more emergency call out work, ranking for near me searches, Google Business Profile for tradespeople. For the money side, see how much a trade website costs.

How it works, and what it costs

I am one person, not an agency. I made the builder so you can see your own site before you spend anything.

1. Build it yourself, free

Open the builder, type in your business name, area and phone number, and it puts your page together in about 2 minutes. No card up front.

2. Free for 14 days

Change the wording, look at it on your phone, show it to someone whose opinion you trust. It costs nothing for the 14 days.

3. Keep it for £299 once

If you keep it, it is £299 once and it goes live on its own address within 24 hours of payment. No monthly fee, hosting included. If you do not pay, it is switched off and nothing is charged.

The domain name itself is not included (about £8 to £15 a year, and it stays in your name). Connecting it is free.

Locksmith website FAQs

Questions locksmiths ask me. Anything else? Send me a message.

Should I say 24 hour if I do not always answer at night?

No. Say the hours you really answer. If you cover nights most of the time but not always, something like "evenings and nights by phone, ring to check" is honest. A customer who rings a 24 hour number at 2am and gets voicemail does not ring back, and may leave a review saying so.

Can I put "no call out fee" on the site?

Only if it is true for every job at every hour. If it is, say it clearly and explain what the customer does pay for: labour and parts, with from prices. If you charge more out of hours, state the out of hours rate. Clear pricing is one of the main things that separates an independent locksmith from the national call centres.

Is it really free to build?

Yes. You build the site yourself in the builder in about 2 minutes, and it is free for 14 days. There is no card up front. If you keep it, it is £299 once, with no monthly fee and hosting included. If you do not pay, the site is switched off and nothing is charged.

What happens after 14 days?

If you want to keep the site, you pay £299 once and it goes live on its own address within 24 hours of payment. There is no monthly fee and hosting is included. The domain name itself is not included (about £8 to £15 a year), but connecting it is free. If you do not pay, the site is switched off and nothing is charged.

Should I show prices for lockouts and lock changes?

Yes, as from prices. A daytime lockout from a stated figure, a standard euro cylinder change from a stated figure, and a note that high security locks and out of hours work cost more. A figure gives someone comparing locksmiths on their phone a reason to ring you rather than keep scrolling.

I am not an MLA member. What can I show instead?

Your real name, a photo of you or your van, the area you cover, a DBS check if you hold one, your public liability insurance, and any training courses you have completed. Do not use the MLA logo or wording like "MLA standard" unless you are approved, because it is easy for a customer to check.
