Your primary category is the most important ranking signal you control. Be specific: choose "Electrician", "Plumber", "Roofing contractor" or "Gardener" rather than something vague like "Contractor". Add secondary categories for the other things you genuinely do.
Then fill in the services list underneath — for example "fuse board replacement", "EV charger installation", "boiler repair", "fascias and soffits". These help Google match you to specific searches and give customers confidence you do the exact job they need.
Step 4: Set your service area by towns and postcodes
Most tradespeople don't want customers turning up at home, so set yours up as a service-area business and hide your address. The key thing: Google asks for real places, not a radius on a map. Add the actual towns, suburbs and postcode districts you cover.
So instead of "10 miles around me", you'd list places like "Beckenham, Bromley, Croydon, BR1, BR2, SE20". Be honest about where you'll actually travel — listing the whole county when you only work locally tends to weaken your ranking, not help it.
